The Undercut Racing Manager Sponsors and the war chest
Cheques, objectives, and why a cheap Principal can bankrupt a season.
Money is the other physics engine. In The Undercut: Racing Manager a fast car with an empty Finance app is a DNF in slow motion. Sponsors always pay you. Suppliers can pay you or bill you. Prize money went up twenty percent in 0.5.4, which finally makes points a cash lever instead of a ribbon. This page is the practical drawer: who to sign, which objective you can actually hit, and when to leave a Principal on the table.
Use it beside getting started on day one and beside the Drivers hub when a contract fight lands in mail. Deep factory spend stays on car development.
Sponsor versus supplier
Sponsors print income and logos. They do not add lap time. Suppliers print engines, tyres, and fuel — and those do. Sign one engine, one tyre, one fuel. Engine first (the part you cannot manufacture), tyres second (the cliff on race strategy), fuel last.
A Partnership supplier can pay you. A Client deal can cost you for better parts. Do not confuse a cheap engine invoice with a good car. The parts tier list is the performance read; this page is the chequebook.
Principal and Secondary
You typically park one Principal (large logo, roughly double the base cheque) and as many Secondary slots as you can fill. About a fifth of the generated pool prefers Principal. The flag is a preference, not a law — negotiation can move the tier if reputation and colour allow.
Base pay scales with budget rating and prominence. Principal multiplies it. Existing contracts keep the cheque they were signed at; renewals use the current curve. 0.5.4 grew the catalogue by about forty percent and shares brands across single-seaters, touring cars, and GT. A name can back three disciplines at once. Every development series now fields backers; six of ten had none before.
A 0.5.4 fix: a sponsor your marketing had at 100% can no longer be stolen by an AI team that was one short. Discovered green-dot deals that vanished on reload were a 0.5.3 bug, also addressed in the launch week.
Reputation is the gate
Starting reputation follows budget tier: Small around 30, Medium around 50, Large around 70. Marketing adds a little every pre-season. Principal gates are harsher than Secondary. A Small team that hammers only Principals will stare at greyed names and then miss Secondary income that actually pays the lights.
Day-one rule from getting started: one Principal you can satisfy, then fill Secondaries. Happiness is a contract. Miss objectives and they walk. Diversify sectors so a single news scandal does not sour half the car.
Some brands want the body colour near their identity. Honouring that helps acceptance and happiness. Ignoring it is legal and annoying. Paint before you promise.
Objectives you can hit
Primary objectives look like “score points in N Grands Prix”, “podiums”, or constructor rank. Secondary objectives appear on about a third of deals. Hit them for a bonus. Miss them and patience drops mid-season.
Match the target to the car you have, not the car you will have in August. A podium Principal on a Medium first career is how you learn the walk animation. A points Principal on a midfield factory is how you keep the cheque. Factory display in 0.5.4 finally matches reality — a weak factory no longer shows a zero car with extra development room — so stop promising podiums because the bar looked empty.
Marketing is the money department
Infrastructure Marketing does not add downforce. It multiplies income, negotiation Work Units, deal quality, sponsor visibility, supplier discounts, and the lottery that surfaces hidden brands. Buy it before you buy a vanity Aero level. Player facilities are pre-season only; 0.5.4 also stopped AI teams rebuilding or shedding buildings between two races — they invest at rollover like you. Plan the year in the workshop, not on a Sunday night.
Negotiation lets you slide money per GP, duration (one to three seasons), and tier. Acceptance odds are live. A failed offer locks the brand briefly. Do not spam a 20% Principal because the colour looked nice.
Finance habits that keep careers alive
- Keep a cash buffer. Opening the Driver Academy wants a healthy war chest on top of the sticker price; details on the academy page.
- Summing per-department running-cost rows overstates upkeep; the total applies a global multiplier. Believe Net per GP in Finance.
- Prize money and championship payouts are twenty percent fatter in 0.5.4. Finishing in the points is a facility payment.
- AI still has loans and share sales as in-season levers. You should not copy panic share sales because a YouTube thumbnail did.
- Infrastructure upgrades are pre-season for you. Do not stare at View Only in July and assume the game is broken.
Bankruptcy is a real ending. Overspend on eight departments toward level 10 and the running cost eats the Principal you signed to fund them. Car development has the upgrade order: Marketing and Engineering before specialist toys.
Sunday checklist
Before Next GP: read sponsor mail, check happiness, glance at Net per GP, and do not queue a factory you cannot pay. After the flag: prize money, repair triage, then objectives. If a Principal is orange, fix results or prepare a replacement from the pool before they walk.
Use the pit strategy tool to score the points those objectives asked for. Use scouting so the driver you signed can actually deliver them. Use the review if you are still deciding whether Early Access economy is a feature or a tax.
Official formulas live on Staz.Tech’s player wiki and still carry alpha banners in places. When a number fights 0.5.4 notes, the launch notes win.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for pitwall decisions, scouting, and career systems.
Should I sign only Principal sponsors?
No. Fill Secondary slots. A Principal you cannot satisfy will walk. Start with the day-one order on getting started.
Do sponsors add car performance?
No. They pay. Engines, tyres, and fuel come from suppliers. Performance parts are on the parts tier list.
Why did my 100% sponsor go to an AI team?
That steal was a bug. 0.5.4 blocks it. Update, then re-check the launch notes.
When do I upgrade Marketing?
In pre-season, before vanity Aero. Marketing multiplies every future cheque. The order is on car development.
