The Driver Academy is how The Undercut: Racing Manager lets you own talent instead of renting it from the free-agent circus. It is also a luxury building with a cash gate, a steep price curve, and a timeline measured in seasons, not weekends. Open it because the factory already scores, not because GP 2 felt lonely.

Opening the building

The Academy is department index 8, levels 0–3, starting closed. Opening (0→1) costs a large cheque and refuses if your bank is under a war-chest threshold — on the order of eight million. The button’s message is honest: you need a healthy reserve, because upkeep starts immediately and three red weekends still exist.

Later levels are even dearer. Treat level 3 as a champion’s toy. Level 1 is enough to start a pipeline.

Slots scale with level: juniors in the 16–18 band and development drivers in the 18–21 band. Empty slots fill with rolled prospects at rollover and when you open the app. Quality scales with level. A development driver must leave at 21. A junior graduates after a couple of seasons. Signing your own development driver to the race team gets an acceptance boost the market does not give a stranger.

Loans and the ladder

Prospects can be loaned to PF2/PF3 teams. You receive a per-GP fee. They receive development time in real seats. This is the correct home for a 16-year-old you cannot legally race in the main series. The 18+ rule is hard: too young, they stay on the ladder. The exception is the GP-10 window, where a 17-year-old can pre-agree a next-season deal because they age at rollover.

Two feeder series run under the championship with shared drivers and brands. They are not flavour. They are where your loans score, where rivals poach, and where unknown PAC hides. Watch World Data and the news. A loan that never finishes higher than midfield is still information: that kid is a B, not an S.

0.5.2 and 0.5.3 thickened this ladder and the eleven-series world. Your academy is one shop in a global market. Act like it.

Why 100% knowledge matters here

Academy prospects are yours, so they read at 100%. You see traits without paying observation Work Units. That is a bigger deal than the slot count. You can refuse to graduate a hot head. You can push a tyre whisperer into the race seat the weekend your veteran hits the injury list.

Do not skip scouting the rest of the market just because the academy is open. The building does not replace scouting. It replaces panic signings.

Finance and mail

Loan income appears in Finance with its own section — a 0.5.4 fix. If you opened the academy and the sheet still looks dry, you are paying upkeep for empty development. Fill slots or downgrade. Downgrade refunds half a level and is a survival lever, not a badge of shame.

Doctor mails, injury chips, and academy mails all hit the same inbox that can block Next GP. Read them. An injured Primary plus an under-18 junior is why the Reserve seat still matters even if you “have an academy.”

When to promote

Promote when:

• they are 18+,
• traits are green on your car character,
• feeder results say the PAC is real,
• you have a seat that will not strand a high-ambition kid in Reserve for two years.

Keep them in the academy when the car is still a mule. A graduate in a D-tier parts package learns bad habits and asks for a raise. The parts tier list and this page are the same career.

Common academy mistakes

Opening at the cash gate with no buffer. Promoting on PAC with a red trait unread (impossible if you look — so look). Treating loans as exile instead of a development program. Using the academy as a third race seat without a Reserve. Ignoring the eleven-series market because “we grow our own” — rivals will still buy the kid you did not lock at GP-10.

The academy is the long game that makes a generated world feel like your world. Build it when the pitwall is already calm. Then let the getting started checklist for year-two careers include “check loans” next to “check sponsors.”
